The Genesis: ready to rock the world

A band which changed the story of music

The Genesis are an English progressive rock boyband, formed in 1969 by Michael Rutherford, Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks and Anthony Phillips, their first guitar. In the 70s, the 80s and 90s the band changed some members.

In 1975, Peter Gabriel left the band, after having huge arguments with the band and Phil Collins. “He was the songs’ owner, he sang even in instrumental tracks” said Tony Banks, keyboard player. Now the band was composed by Phil Collins, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Steve Hackett.

In 1977 after the publication of their album, Steve Hackett left the band too.   The three musicians’ success was really extraordinary: Tony Banks, on keyboard and bass; Phil Collins, singer and drummer; Mike Rutherford, guitarist. So they went on this way till 1991, when Phil Collins left the band, to continue his solo career.

Phil Collins had a really important role in those years: he had two bands, the Genesis and the Brand X. However he didn’t get on with the Brand, and therefore he decided to continue his own career and the  Genesis’ career too!

The Genesis  published many albums.

1969: from Genesis to revelation. This album doesn’t contain any famous songs.

1970: Trespass. This one contains songs as The Knife.

1971: Nursery Rhyme. This album contains songs as “For absent friends” and “Around the barrel”

1972: Foxtrot. This disc contains songs as “Supper’s ready”, which lasts 23 minutes.

1973: Selling England by the Pound. The disc contains songs as “I know what I like (in your wardrobe)”, and “The musical box”

1974: The cinema show (a live album)

1975: The lamb lies down on Broadway. It contains songs as “Anyway”, and other amazing ones.

(Peter Gabriel’s version)

1976: A trick of the tail. The album contains songs which as “Entangled”. This album won the platinum disc.

1976: Seconds out (live album). It contains songs played in different concerts but all the songs were sung by Phil Collins.

1977: Spot the pigeon. It contains a beautiful song, called Match of the day.

1978: and then there were three. This album contains songs as the cool “snowbound”

1979: wind and wuthering. This album is very particular, because there is a difference: Steve Hackett doesn’t play in this band anymore, and you can hear it by the songs, which have changing rythms, as when there was still Peter Gabriel . The album contains a famous song called: Eleventh of march.

1980: duke. This is one of the boom albums in the 80S. it contains songs as “turn it on again” and the fantastic “please don’t ask”.

1983: genesis. This album is one of the most sold in the world and easily found on web. It contains fantastic songs as “home by the sea”

1986: invisible touch. This album won the Grammy Awards and the Music Awards, thanks to the song “land of confusion” and the famous hit “invisible touch”. You can immediately hear this album shows the sound of the 80S, clear and strong.

1991: we can’t dance. This the last album contains hits as “never a time”

(Phil Collins’ formation)

Conclusion

After this big career, the band split up. Now it seems they want to make a reunion, even if they made one (only in 2007, for a concert). We hope this reunion will bring some new songs. Some rumours say Peter Gabriel will join the band too.
